QUALIFICATIONS: Must be a Registered Dietitian (RD), Licensed Dietitian (LD), Registered Nurse (RN), Dietetic Technician Registered (DTR), Dietetic Technician (DT), or a four-year nutrition/dietetics graduate or Physician’s Assistant. Has, at minimum, one year of experience in counseling breastfeeding women and is a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), Certified Lactation Specialist (CLS) or International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). A valid Ohio driver’s license with own vehicle and ability to maintain a driving record that meets the insurability requirements of Miami County Public Health’s insurance provider. Registered, Licensed Dietitian (RD, LD) or International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) preferred.

DUTIES: Assists WIC participants in establishing and meeting their breastfeeding goals. Keeps current with up-to-date breastfeeding information and disseminates this as well as FNS provided information to other local agency staff  Identifies, coordinates, and collaborates with community breastfeeding stakeholders. Monitors local agency breastfeeding rates. Ensures that breast pump issuance, inventory, and maintenance are logged and monitored. Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of local agency breastfeeding activities. Contributes to the development of peer helper program goals and objectives. Conducts a needs assessment to identify gaps in breastfeeding resources and services within the project and community that the WIC peer helper program can address. Assists with the interviewing and hiring of the peer helpers. Oversee the training of peer helpers, mentors new peer helpers, providing routine follow-up and guidance in the early days of the job. Provides ongoing supervision and feedback for peer helpers. Reports on peer helper program activities to Director and the State agency. Assesses and documents a participant’s health and/or nutrition risk. Provides individual and group nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support, that is responsive to the identified needs/interests of participants. Identifies the need for individual care plans. Reviews food and formula prescriptions and contacts and coordinates with medical providers as needed. Prescribes appropriate food packages. Refers participants to other health and social services and provides appropriate follow-up to referrals. Document nutrition services provided, including referrals and follow-up to referrals. Attends staff meetings and serves on temporary committees/teams, including Continuous Quality Improvement and Strategic Planning.
