Assistant Transfer Station Operations Manager

Sanitary Engineering - Troy, OH - Full Time

POSITION SUMMARY: Under general direction, maintains schedules and reports, participates in supervisory processes, performs maintenance as needed, and assists Operations Manager with other various daily operations of the Recycling/Transfer Station and Sanitary Engineering department

QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of four (4) years of high school or equivalent supplemented by more than one (1) year of experience in supervision of the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment for loading and hauling, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license. Must possess a valid Ohio commercial driver’s license, Class B, or be eligible to obtain within one hundred twenty (120) days of employment. Must obtain OSHA 40-hour Hazardous Material Certification within one (1) year of hire.

DUTIES: Plans and schedules own and employees' work schedules under direction of the Operations Manager, performs duties of manager during absences, participates in the hiring process for new employees, assists Operations Manager in evaluating employees, assists in preparing the budget and monitoring expenses for the division, responsible for the accounting, tracking, and record keeping of physical assets. Maintains routine daily and weekly reports for Transfer Station operations, assists in the absence of Operators I and II (operates recycling and transfer station equipment to transfer refuse to semi-tractor trailers for transport to disposal site, operates semi-tractor and other equipment to transfer solid waste to and from tipping floor or loading area, etc.), assists Transfer Station Operations Manager in transportation of recyclables from transfer station to recycling centers, monitors equipment for proper fluid levels, damage and other maintenance needs. Assists with maintenance of grounds and facilities (mows grass, landscapes grounds, pulls weeds, trims shrubs and trees, plows and shovels snow, picks up trash, paints facilities, sweeps floors and pavement, etc.), sorts and separates materials to be recycled and diverted from landfill, performs routine maintenance and repairs to Department buildings and facilities, performs custodial duties as directed. Assists customers and employees as necessary, processes materials for transfer or recycling, assists and directs customers in tipping floor area and communicates and enforces safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures, including flow control enforcement. Oversees and manages small projects with contractors, vendors, and suppliers, inspects and approves work of contractors. Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees or department including providing input on hiring and disciplinary actions and work objectives/effectiveness, performance evaluations, and realigning work, as needed. Must maintain all required licensures and certifications. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions. Demonstrates regular, predictable, and punctual attendance.

UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, drive, use hands to finger, handle, grab, restrain, feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear, and must frequently lift and/or carry up to fifty (50) pounds on a regular basis.

The employee is exposed to, must negotiate, use, or work with or in the vicinity of portable fire extinguishers, potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons, moving trucks and vehicles, floor openings, wall openings and holes, open-sided floors, platforms and runways, stairs, fixed industrial stairs, portable wood and metal ladders, fixed ladders, noisy operations or activities, flammable and combustible liquids, general requirements for use, care, and limitations of personal protective equipment, medical and first aid, handling material and supplies (mechanical handling equipment, the manner in which things are stored, and housekeeping), hand and portable power tools including physical guards, switches, lawn mower, and power washer, air contaminants (trucks fumes, dust, etc.), chemicals (household hazardous waste, etc.), hot, cold, wet, humid or windy weather conditions, hazardous driving conditions, moving trucks and vehicles, bees and other insects.
